This year, TNG shifted our focus from the annual Bright Ideas Symposium to work alongside The City of Toronto for an urgent and community-focused event addressing violence prevention. TNG Trustee Hub team coordinated the three-day Safe TO Violence Prevention Symposium, which took place from September 18 to 20 at the Centennial College Event Centre. This symposium marked a crucial step in creating solutions for the ongoing challenges around gun violence in our city, bringing together over 220 daily in-person attendees and more than 100 virtual participants from all walks of life community leaders, youth advocates, city officials, and concerned citizens alike.
Key Takeaways & Solutions
We kicked off with a powerful tribute to Louis March, honoring his relentless work as a community champion. Throughout the three-day event, participants explored a range of innovative ideas and actionable solutions to combat violence in Toronto. Sessions focused on a collaborative approach to:
Addressing Root Causes: From systemic inequities to economic and social stressors, there was a strong emphasis on tackling the root causes of violence, including poverty, mental health, and youth disenfranchisement.
Community-Based Interventions: The importance of investing in community-driven strategies was highlighted. These included expanding mentorship programs, supporting local youth organizations, and developing arts-based outlets for at-risk populations.
Policy and Policing Reforms: Discussions addressed the need for policy changes and a shift towards preventative policing models, emphasizing harm reduction over punitive measures.
Mental Health Support: As violence prevention is closely linked to mental health, many participants called for better access to mental health services and trauma-informed care, especially in underserved communities.
Safe Spaces for Youth: Multiple solutions focused on creating safe environments for youth, such as recreational centers, arts programs, and spaces that offer guidance and a sense of belonging.
Powerful Performances & Inspiring Keynotes
The symposium also provided a platform for powerful performances and thought-provoking keynotes, which brought to life the themes of peace and community resilience:
DJ Twisted Minds Sound Crew kept the energy alive, ensuring that every break was filled with uplifting beats and a sense of togetherness. As we look ahead, the Safe TO Symposium has reminded us that we must continue to build upon these conversations, ensuring that the voices of our communities are heard and that actions are taken to reduce violence in all its forms.
